Good breathing, eating and sleeping practices are vital for the health, growth and happiness of our children. Did you know that the one thing that connects these three important areas of life is airway health?
Poor airway habits can cause problems with growth, learning, memory, speech and behaviour, and lead to unhappy kids and frustrated parents. Airway health is not something regularly taught to parents, so common airway problems, like mouth breathing, are often going unnoticed or brushed off as ‘normal’. Even children with milder sleep and airway issues can suffer unnecessarily.
To solve airway issues for you and your child, the best thing is to treat airway issues early, at the first signs of difficulty. And the good news is that, as a parent, there’s a lot you can do to help.
Well Spoken’s Airway Fit 4 Life online course program guides you, helps you discover if your child is airway fit using a number of simple screening methods you can do at home.

What is airway fitness?
Your airway is made up of your face, nose, mouth, throat, voice box, windpipe, lungs and diaphragm. It’s a seemingly small part of our bodies, but one that has a seismic impact on our health – and especially the health of our children.
Studies estimate that millions of kids worldwide suffer from airway and sleep breathing problems. (From Children’s Airway First Foundation: 400,00,000). Yet parents are simply not taught about airway health and the potential problems to look out for. As a result, too many children and their families are suffering unknowingly… when it really doesn’t have to be that way.
As a parent, Well Spoken’s Airway Fit 4 Life program can provide you with the tools, knowledge, information and resources you need to make sure your kids are airway fit.
Why should I ensure my child
is airway fit?
Having airway fit children is vital. The importance of being airway fit starts in infancy – even in utero, because the very beginnings of airway fitness start in utero! A baby must be able to breathe through the nose to feed properly at birth. Breastfeeding and chewing on solid foods help babies develop their face, mouth and throat muscles which, in turn, grow their jaw bones and are essential for a healthy airway.
For toddlers, developing good chewing and swallowing habits from a young age prepares the muscles that support speech development and nose breathing, night and day. Proper chewing and swallowing habits also help children’s ear tubes to drain efficiently into the back of their throats, which is really important when it comes to developing speech.
Being on top of your kids’ airway issues in early childhood can set them up to start school successfully, and help avoid patterns that lead to poor breathing and disruptive sleep that affect them day-to-day and into their later years
What can happen if my child is not airway fit?
In modern life, what we eat and the way we breathe means our kids are not always airway fit. Allergies, food intolerances and medical sensitivities to name a few, can play havoc on their airway health, too.
Issues with your child’s airway health can mean they have problems with:
Sleeping
Breathing
Eating and drinking
Social and emotional development and mental health
Physical health

Meet Daniel
Daniel was four years old when he first came to Well Spoken. Since the age of two, he refused to go to bed, woke his parents during the night, and only slept for around seven hours a night. His parents saw more than 26 medical specialists across the US and Australia looking for answers. It wasn’t until a dentist recognised that Daniel had an airway problem that they finally started to make progress and get him the help he – and his family – needed.
